Playtech and its licensees are co-sponsoring a large-scale humanitarian relief mission to send $1.8 million in medical supplies to Sri Lankan victims of the tsunami disaster
Several weeks have passed since the devastating tsunami hit South-East Asia, killing over 150,000 people and wreaking havoc on the lives of a further 5 million inhabitants. Among the victims are 31,000 Sri Lankans confirmed to have died and tens of thousands more left homeless, without families or livelihoods.
Though much international aid has flowed into Sri Lanka since, the country continues to struggle to provide long-term hospitalization, care and counselling for tens of thousands of its civilians. The spotlight of world media has dimmed in recent weeks, but challenge to see it through the next year has only begun for these people.
The mission being sponsored by Playtech and its licensees will deliver enough medical supplies to support over 10,000 people for over a year - is being spearheaded by Knightsbridge International (www.kbi.org), a non-governmental organization which provides humanitarian assistance and disaster relief worldwide in harrowing and devastated places such as Afghanistan, Rwanda, Chechnya and the Philippines. Over the past month, Knightsbridge has been flying into the region desperately needed medical supplies, food and medical specialists. Early volunteers on previous missions include heavyweight boxing champion Evander Holyfield and Cincinnati Reds owner Carl Lindner.
